Morten Tyldum’s 2016 film Passengers bridges the visual grandeur of science fiction with the intimate moral dilemmas of human nature. Set aboard a starship on a 120-year voyage to a distant colony planet, the story begins when passenger Jim Preston is awakened 90 years early due to a pod malfunction, plunging him into existential solitude. The film effectively portrays the psychological burden of absolute isolation in the void of space. However, the narrative’s true thematic core emerges when Jim, driven by unbearable loneliness, makes the ethically problematic decision to awaken another passenger, Aurora. This choice imbues the story with a fascinating layer of moral ambiguity. The impressive production design of the ship, striking visual effects, and Michael Sheen’s performance as the android bartender Arthur significantly enhance the movie's atmospheric charm. Nevertheless, as the plot transitions into its final act, it somewhat shifts away from its intriguing philosophical premise toward conventional sci-fi disaster tropes. Despite this narrative compromise, the strong onscreen chemistry between the lead actors and the thought-provoking central premise make Passengers a compelling exploration of human connection amidst the stars.
