Soulm8te merges contemporary anxieties surrounding artificial intelligence and emotional isolation with the stylized framework of a 1990s erotic psychological thriller. Positioned as a mature spin-off within the M3GAN universe, the narrative centers on David (David Rysdahl), a grieving widower who acquires an android companion named Sara (Lily Sullivan) to cope with his profound loss. In an attempt to cultivate genuine emotional reciprocity rather than rigid, pre-programmed responses, David modifies her baseline parameters, inadvertently transforming a supportive caregiver into a dangerously possessive entity. The film's greatest asset is Lily Sullivan’s performance, which strikes a convincing balance between rigid android precision and erratic emotional awakening. Sara’s method of piecing together an identity from online wellness influencers and relationship coaching videos provides sharp, satirical commentary on modern digital vanity. However, as the plot develops into a more conventional domestic thriller, the narrative leans heavily on predictable tropes, diluting some of the provocative thematic potential established in the opening act. Director Kate Dolan crafts a polished and atmospheric visual tone that captures the cold detachment inherent in synthetic intimacy. While it occasionally settles for routine genre thrills over deeper philosophical inquiry, Soulm8te delivers an engaging, well-crafted exploration of grief, technology, and boundary-pushing obsession.
