André, a small-time ex-convict, seems to owe money to everyone in Paris, including a crime boss who promises to kill him if he doesn't repay him by midnight. After failing to find protection from the American embassy and the French police, a despairing André scrambles onto a bridge over the Seine, intending to leap to his death. He is surprised to see a tall, beautiful girl clinging to a rail on the same bridge, apparently preparing to end her life as well. She jumps, and he jumps too, suddenly resolving to save her life. After scrambling ashore, she tells him her name is Angel-A. Together, they take a cruise on the Seine, repay André's creditors, visit a Parisian nightspot, and more, as Angel-A helps André. He learns that for this purpose she has fallen out of the sky and into his life. André finds himself falling in love with this mysterious beauty.

Luc Besson’s 2005 feature Angel-A offers a poetic, fairytale-like yet raw story of self-discovery blooming against the black-and-white backdrop of Paris. Visually elevated by Thierry Arbogast’s striking cinematography, the film transforms iconic Parisian landmarks into timeless, serene landscapes almost entirely emptied of human noise. Shifting away from his signature action-heavy style, Besson places character dynamics and intimate dialogue at the center, crafting a visually stylized and emotionally resonant narrative. The story hinges on the relationship between André, a petty scam artist drowning in debt and self-loathing, and Angela, a mysterious, statuesque woman who enters his life just as he prepares to jump into the Seine. The stark physical and emotional contrast between the two serves as the film's core driving force. As André’s insecurities collide with Angela’s unshakeable confidence and unconditional acceptance, a compelling journey of emotional redemption unfolds. While the narrative ostensibly revolves around settling financial debts with dangerous creditors, the real struggle lies in André learning to forgive himself and face his own reflection with love. Though some of the philosophical monologues lean slightly didactic at times, the magnetic chemistry between Jamel Debbouze and Rie Rasmussen keeps the film grounded and engaging throughout.
