Lyndon B. Johnson was raised in modest circumstances. In 1913, his family sold their farm in Stonewall and relocated to nearby Johnson City, Texas, where he attended Johnson City High School, graduating in 1924. He then enrolled at the Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, funding his education by teaching underprivileged Mexican-American students. After completing his degree, he taught in Pearsall and at high schools across Houston.
In 1931, Johnson launched his political career in Washington, D.C., serving as legislative secretary to Texas Congressman Richard M. Kleberg. In 1934, he married Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor of Karnack, Texas. The following year, he was appointed director of the National Youth Administration for Texas. Following his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1937, Johnson became a trusted ally and protégé of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1942, he temporarily stepped away from Congress to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II.
In 1948, Johnson was elected to the U.S. Senate representing Texas (taking office in 1949), where he served as a dominant leader of the Democratic Party and championed key legislative reforms until 1961. He then assumed the office of Vice President under President John F. Kennedy. Following Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963, Johnson succeeded to the presidency and went on to win a landslide victory in the 1964 presidential election.
As president, Johnson introduced his signature domestic agenda, the "Great Society," which established sweeping reforms in healthcare and education alongside initiatives for public housing and urban renewal. His administration enacted historic legislation, most notably the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, securing constitutional equality and voting protections for African Americans. However, unresolved domestic racial tensions, rising urban unrest, and anti-war student demonstrations increasingly complicated his presidency.
In foreign affairs, Johnson's tenure was defined by the major escalation of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. The mounting financial and human toll of the conflict severely constrained domestic programs and undermined public support for his reforms. Facing persistent military stalemates and widespread anti-war protests, Johnson announced on March 31, 1968, that he would not seek reelection. Before leaving office, he initiated preliminary peace talks in Paris in May 1968. Following the election of Richard Nixon, Johnson retired to his ranch in Stonewall near San Antonio, Texas. He died of a heart attack on January 22, 1973, at the age of 64.
